La Liga Heart Stopper

Monday, June 18th, 2007

The Spanish Premiere League(La Liga) culminated yesterday with one of the most dramatic and nail biting race to the championship. There were three teams in contention:Real Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla the first two are tied and the latter behind by just 2 points. Although I wasn’t able to watch the games, I followed it through a live internet feed via SkySports and this kept me in the edge of my bed(I was already ready to sleep.)

Real Madrid, perhaps looking past the season finale, saw its title bid dashed when opponent Mallorca scored in the 17th minute. It was a rude awakening to the whites and was further aggravated when leading scorer Ruud limped and was substituted before the half ended. Meanwhile the visiting Barcelona, was hell bent on defending their title as they romped easily to a 3-0 half time lead. Sevilla closed the half level with Villareal. The 2nd half appeared bleak as David Beckham was substituted for Jose Reyes as the English man also aggravated his injury. Barcelona scored again making it 4-0 and looked to be champion once again. But then it was the same attitude and tenacity that the whites displayed the last crucial 9 games where the came from behind to win, this time courtesy of Reyes(2), and Mahamadou Diarra who earlier begged off from his home country to play this important game, scored a powerful header to nullify any win that Barcelona will make(because of a better head to head match.) The final score 3-1 Real Madrid.

It was I think the first time that the league title went down the wire, and between two heated rivals nonetheless. It was a vindication to David Beckham that despite being relegated to the bench and incurred the wrath of his manager, nevertheless worked his way to the starting lineup and  inspired the team by being professional and having an incredible work ethic, not to mention several assists to his teammates during the last stages of the league matches. It was also the best send off any retiring or leaving player could ever have.

Here’s to the most succesful and popular club in the world: Congratulations Real Madrid!!! Champions of La Liga 06-07

Paternal Instinct

It’s never easy being away from home, away from your love ones. An even more difficult to bear is not being there when the kids are growing up. All overseas parents sacrifice this just so their kids are able to have a better life, with a major consequence:they become estranged from their kids.

Some parents go through extra lengths so that their kids are able to come with them to the country/place that they work. It just so prevalent, especially here(Middle East) they are so excited to go home and meet their kids but come back feeling empty and a stranger to their kids. It’s just so sad, I’ve consoled some of my friends here feeling that way.

I was privy to the love of the father to his son when a friend of mine told me of an almost dilemma he had today. You see, he had worked overseas for almost 25+ years, his kids grew up without him around, and although he was able to provide them with their needs he still felt a stranger around them. There was a sense of bitter regret about being away from them, and he was always looking up for something to make up for it.  That’s why he was so excited when his son got approved to work here, he thinks nows the time to finally get closer to him.

His department head is transferring his son to another location, which totally surprised and disheartened him since he requested his son to work with him. He was getting upset already but instead of blowing up, he told the truth: It was his last chance to be a father to his son, a role he sacrificed to be a better provider to his family. It was a father card he drew, and it worked they reconsidered.

I am not a father(hopefully this year) yet, hopefully when that time comes I won’t be a stranger to my kid. That’s one of my greatest fear.

Happy Father’s Day to All!!!

Make way for King James

Sunday, June 3rd, 2007

After a super human effort in game 6 of the Eastern Playoffs where he scored 48 pts, and previously (game 4) he had to log 44 mins to carry the entire Cavaliers on his shoulder to snatch the Eastern Conference Finals Championship past the Detroit Pistons.

They were basically written off, and especially when they fell 0-2 behind the favorite Detroit Pistons, but the King finally delivered. It was pure talent and the drive to win, a very Jordanesque trait, that prompted James to carry the team, however he also inspired the his teammate that games 4 and 6 he didn’t have to score alot.

Personally I am not a fan of James, I think he’s a man-child with freakish talent not to mention very tall for his position(point/shooting guard) standing at 6′8". However, I love the leadership, he’s the youngest of course(22) and he’s not afraid to take that mantle, I applaud that. I was already looking for a Detroit vs Spurs finals, looks like James will have to increase his game more than a notch for this one. Do I see an upset in the offing?

Gilmore_girls

This post is a month late already, I’m talking about the Gilmore Girls dramedy finishing its last season(7th) It was announced 3rd of May(or earlier) this year, that the show about having a parent as your best buddy, will not continue after its 7th season. It was also mired of controversies of the very nature of the cancellation of a supposedly 8th season. According to the stories, it all started when the original creator Amy Paladino didn’t return for the 7th season, a dispute of a business nature was the reason. Without the original author, the 7th season sort of struggled and although the wit and comedy was there it felt different from the previous seasons. I didn’t even know the Amy wasn’t onboard, it just felt different.

Anyhow, the mere charm not the mention fast talk of the two, made up for whatever was lacking the final season. However I do agree with Lauren Graham, that the story already made full circle, there was no point in ruining it with unnecessary splintered story lines. Rory(Alexis) graduated, and although was having trouble getting a job was invited to be a reporter on a presidential campaign and got to meet her idol:Christianne Amanpour. Luke(Scott) and Lorelai(Lauren) finally made peace and there was definitely spark fo romance in the offing. The season finale ended well, and the rest of the story will continue however we won’t be there to be part of it.
